8 Fun Facts you never knew about burgers
Fact 1: The word “burger” comes from Hamburger
Hamburger is the actual name of this well-known fast food item; the term “burger” is only a shortened version. The term originated from Hamburg steaks, which German immigrants brought to the United States in the early 1890s.
Fact 2: Burgers are served differently in different nations
Burgers are prepared differently around the world than they are here in the UK. Chicken and veggies are mostly used to make hamburgers in India, since beef consumption is illegal in some states. The topping on hamburgers in Mexico is ham and there are sometimes no buns on hamburgers in Japan!
Fact 3: The world’s largest burger filled the stomachs of 8000 people!
The heaviest burger ever measured was 3,591 pounds. It was produced in 1982 in Rutland, North Dakota, and was eaten by 8000 people. This was unofficial though! Since then, there have been other attempts but none stand out better than the attempt of Christian Dischinger, Hans Maurer, Rudi Dietl, Tom Reciheneder, Wolfgang Leeb and Josef Zellner. Together, in July 2017, the team created a burger that weighed in at a whopping 2,566 lb 9 oz (1164.2kg)! This is officially credited by Guiness as the world record largest hamburger (Largest hamburger | Guinness World Records)!
Fact 4: Old school slang terms for burgers
“A chopped steak” is one old school slang name for a burger. This term originates from the fact that a steak was “chopped up” to then combine the meat together and form a burger patty. Even the best cheeseburgers can come by many different names!
Fact 5: White Castle is the oldest burger selling retail chain in the world
When White Castle debuted in 1921, each burger cost 5 cents. It is the world’s first and oldest burger chain. At first, it was like a beef sandwich, often referred to as the “Hamburg sausage”, where the burger was made by throwing scraps of minced beef in between bread slices with some added veggies. In the UK, Wimpy is credited as being the first chain to serve up burger offerings- their introduction to the scene coming in 1954.
Fact 6: The burger was first invented in Seymour Fair, Wisconsin, in 1885
Nagreen and Louis Lassen have claimed to have invented the first burger. They claimed that they had created the first hamburger by squeezing a beef meatball between two slices of bread and serving it to their clients.
In fact, their original burger joint still forbids the use of ketchup, mustard, and mayonnaise and only offers onions, tomatoes, and cheese spread as condiments.
Fact 7: McDonald’s has the biggest record for selling burgers
The burger behemoth that is McDonalds has smashed records since the company entered the fast food scene. As of today, it holds the record for having sold more than 300 billion hamburgers.
The corporation sells more than 75 hamburgers every second, according to some analysis. To compare the flavours, try our chicken grilled burger and a chicken one from McD’s. We certainly know which one we think is tastier!
Fact 8: Americans top the chart for consuming the most burgers
Some nations refer to it as a burger, while others refer to it as a sandwich. Bizarre as it may seem, burgers make up 60% of all sandwiches sold worldwide. So, if you’re having a chicken burger in Walsall from Yum Burger, you’re contributing to that stat!
According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Americans eat around 50 billion hamburgers annually. Americans often eat hamburgers three times per week. In fact, if all of the hamburgers consumed by Americans in a year were placed in a straight line, our planet would be circled 32 times! In the UK, we do not have this kind of stat available but a recent documentary on Channel 5 claimed that the UK eats around 2.5billion beef burgers a year.
